Prepare Blueberry (or any fruit) Roll-Ups in 5 Minutes

My granddaughter and I love to experiment in the kitchen!  We have lots of fun together.  After watching a video on how to make homemade fruit roll-ups with fresh fruit, we decided to give it a try.

Here is what we did:

  1. Pre-heat the oven at 225 degrees F;
  2.  Prepare a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper (I use this brand), or a Silpat baking mat;
  3. Since we only had frozen blueberries on hand, we heated about 3 cups of frozen blueberries in a saucepan.  After we felt they were no longer frozen, we added them to the VitaMix machine with about 1 TBSP of honey and pureed the mixture until it was smooth;
  4. Next, we poured the mixture into the lined pan and spread it out evenly (my granddaughter is doing this part in super speed);
  5. To ensure all is level, tap the cookie sheet on the counter a few times;
  6. Place your oven rack higher (closer to the top element);
  7. Slip your cookie sheet with your fruity mixture onto the rack and bake for 2-3 hours.  After 2 hours, make sure to check it regularly (it might not take the full 3 hours for you.  When it’s tacky to the touch but doesn’t stick to your finger, it’s ready.
  8. Let it cool;
  9. Cut into strips, roll and store in a container.

The great thing about these DIY, fruit roll-ups is that you can use a variety of different fruits to make these.  A combination of different fruit would be delicious as well!  I feel that more experiments will be made in the kitchen very soon…

Why make your own fruit roll-ups?

Nowadays, we are more health conscious and we care about what we put into our bodies, especially our children and grandchildren’s little bodies.  We are more aware of the list of chemicals found in many of the packaged foods that fill the supermarket shelves.

I copied the list of ingredients found in a popular, fruit roll-up brand:

-Apple puree, corn syrup, polydextrose, corn syrup solids, sugar and/or golden sugar, maltodextrin, water, modified palm oil, pear puree concentrate, citric acid, sodium citrate, pectin, monoglycerides, malic acid, ascorbic acid, acetylated monoglycerides, colour (fruit and vegetable juice concentrates, spirulina concentrate, turmeric extract), natural flavour, sulphites…

Now let’s compare the above ingredients to our homemade fruit roll-ups:

-Wild blueberries, local honey.

I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s well worth the 5 minutes to prepare this healthy treat!
